No one brings mental or physical retardation upon themselves. Because if not for the grace of God, that could be my child they are talking about. The fact that we let children get away with using it is a testament to how little our society respects people with mental disabilities.Īs a mother, this breaks my heart. And that’s the damaging thing about this word: It’s used so easily, so casually, with so little regard to its actual meaning. If you’ve spent any significant amount of time on a schoolyard playground, you’ve probably heard that word thrown around lightheartedly. One is the N-word, which is so foul that I neither care to write it nor do I want you to have to read it. I can say with complete certainty that neither have come from my mouth. There are two words, however, that positively make my stomach turn. I’m a writer, so by nature, I love words.
